One of the most difficult shots in golf is playing from the deep rough. Shots from the rough are very difficult but there are several things you can do to produce more successes .

Club Selection – When the grass is growing toward you from the target , use one more club than you would normally play for the distance you’re trying to hit . Always position the ball a little further back in your stance. If the grass is growing towards your target, then use one less club than normal for that distance .

Open the clubface – The deep grass will wrap around the hosel of your club causing the clubface to close. Prepare for this by opening the clubface some and you will be able to counteract the effect the grass will have on the golf club .

Stand closer to the ball – Standing closer to the golf ball will assist you in swinging the club on a more vertical swing plane. This gets the golf club into and out of the grass more quickly, reducing the overall effect the grass will have on your golf club .

Grip the club tighter – We have been taught that having a light grip on the club allows for a more fluid swing. The opposite is true when playing a shot out of the deep rough. Because the grass will grab and twist the golf club during the downswing, having a tighter grip on the golf club is very important to reduce twisting.

Cock your wrists – When playing out of the deep rough, you want to come down sharply to reduce the amount of time the clubface is in contact with the grass before striking the golf ball.

Playing out of the deep rough is never an easy thing. Next time you have to do it, use these tips.
