Most companies now give free fitting, but make sure you go to a proper specialist. It might take time to get a session booked but boy will it do wonders.
Even if you have to pay a bit more for them it will be worth it. You can't complain when you hit bad shots because it's fitted for you. Golf clubs will last you a few years at least if not almost a life time, depending how often you play.
It's worth spending that bit more for a set of quality irons such as Mizuno. Check out the different videos on Mizuno and see how they fit you http://golf.mizunoeurope.com/videos/inde…
The video on this link shows how Mizuno fit you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NlbkfFNI…
I would like to add that I am getting custom fitted tomorrow

under 500 bucks i would go for either the nike sumo irons or callaway big bertha irons
if ur looking around 700 bucks i would say the cleveland cg7, nike victory red full cavity, or the new taylormade burner irons,
also if ur looking to spend even more than that which i doubt u r u could look at a number of forged blade type irons which r hard to hit.
it also depends on ur handicap. someone with a higher handicap should go for the under 500 buck range where a lower handicap player can gain more from an expensive set of clubs.
